studio in paris

studio in paris

This summer the hubs and I are going to spend a week at the Chateau Ventenac with a group of 8 friends from law school. Needless to say, I’m pretty excited!

(Yes, the whole thing!!!)

Just last night I booked our tickets using aeroplan points. Yay! [Begin rant] Aeroplan seemed like a great deal… until I got the bill. It cost $800 for two “free” trips to Europe. Sure, that’s $1400 cheaper than buying them ourselves, but it just left me with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve previously paid $500 for the privilege of using aeroplan, which sucks, but $800. Come on. To put this into perspective a few weeks ago I flew to San Francisco all in, ticket, taxes, everything, for $330. Just saying. [End rant]

Notwithstanding the cost of flying there, I am getting pretty excited. We are flying overnight to Paris, arriving on a Monday morning at 9:55 am, spending the week in Paris, taking the TGV down to the Chateau for a week, then taking a train to Barcelona and spending 3 days/4 nights in Barcelona before we need to come home. I’m going to use up 12 vacation days (eek), but I’ve got some banked from last year, and it will be worth it! I cannot wait!

At this point, though, I’m trying to figure out where we should stay in Paris and Barcelona. We are going to be in each of the cities for enough days to warrant renting an apartment rather than a hotel, and I have some top choices.

If you’ve never staying in an apartment rather than a hotel before, I *highly* recommend it. First, it’s way cheaper. Second, its generally bigger, and more comfortable. And third, you may meet new friends (we became friends with Paola & Isak after they rented us an apartment in Rio).

Right now, I’m trying to figure out where to stay in Paris for our first five nights.  Some top contenders are:

Nuits St. Georges Paris | 40 euros pn

On price alone, this is by far the top contender… If it is not too good to be true. It looks beautiful, it is in a good location and it looks pristine, clean and bright. However; at this price, it makes me a little suspicious.

Charming apartment in Paris 15th | 47 euros pn

Marina’s place looks AMAZING. It’s also listed through a broker, airbnb, so if we have a problem, there is someone to help us. Finally, its in the 15e, and I’ve never stayed in the 15e, so it means a new neighbourhood to discover!

Heart of Montmartre Industrial Loft | 50 euros pn

Maurice’s place looks a little rough around the edges, and it is on the ground floor. But, it is right in Montmartre and comes with wifi. Location wise, it is amazing. It’s a serious contender.  It’s also through airbnb, which provides and added level of security.  [Update.  This was vetoed by the hubs.  Apparently it is too rough around the edges for our limited vacation days.]

The Craigslist Ad | 60 euros per night

Then we have the craigslist ad. It looks amazing. Like seriously amazing. In Montmartre. With wifi. But it is only posted on craigslist. I know that is ridiculous, I’ve found all these other website from craiglist. And almost anyone can throw together a website in a minute. But I don’t know. Something about no link just makes my heart flutter.  I’ll have to contact the owner and see how I feel.

Paris Flats, Two Choices | 65 euros per night
This one:

Or this one:

These are both cute and well located. They are great choices, if some of the others, above, fall through.

Any and all thoughts are appreciated!  Have you rented an apartment in Paris (or anywhere else for that matter) before?

buffalo mac&cheese

buffalo mac&cheese

Last week a little blip popped up on my facebook:

Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese….. YUM

wrote my cousin Angie. And in an instant, I knew I had to have it. My cousin Angie is pregnant, and she served this dish for two pregnant friends. They loved it. I’m not pregnant (and neither is the hubs) but we both thought this was one of the best things we have ever eaten. So, preggo or not, make this recipe, and savour every minute of it!

Angie found the recipe at The Girl Who Ate Everything. I hadn’t previously stumbled across Christy’s blog, but I have to say… I’ll be back!

Buffalo Mac & Cheese 001

This recipe isn’t particularly difficult to prepare, but it is time consuming. I promise that it is well worth the effort, but if like me you don’t have much time to cook on weekdays, I suggest you try this on a weekend! It starts off with finely chopped onions, celery, garlic and shredded chicken.

Buffalo Mac & Cheese 002

Add to that a couple of mountains of cheese, a roux, and some Franks (buffalo style) RedHot.

Buffalo Mac & Cheese 003

Prepare your dish and pop it in the oven till it bubbles. Presto change-o, you have the world’s most delicious mac and cheese.

Buffalo Mac & Cheese 007

And because we *really* needed more calories at dinner, we scarfed it down with a glass of milk and a followed it with three delicious macarons.

Buffalo Mac & Cheese 005

From left to right, Vanilla Bean, Raspberry, Chocolate Ginger.  If you want to check out some more delicious macarons, check out my friend Heather’s “No Macaron Left Behind” Challenge!

All in all, and amazing dinner.

etsy finds

etsy finds

It’s a testament to my attitude these days, when one of the very first posts on my new blog lists some recent sweet Etsy finds. I love Etsy. I spend much to much time “rummaging” around trying to find the gems that speak to me. Several weeks ago, I came across this print by January Jones City Prints.

I immediately fell in love with it and tried to figure out how I could incorporate it into my current decor.  The first option would have entailed getting the print in red or black, to match our current decor.  The problem is, I’m quickly getting over the red and don’t forsee much red in my future.  I also don’t love thought of my beachy print in red.  So option 1 was out.  That left option 2.  Wait until I get the chance to redecorate.   As you will find out in the coming months, the redecoration plan is always in the back of my mind.  Whether or not we’ve just finished redecorating.  We’re thinking about staying, we’re thinking about moving, and I’m not quite ready to commit to redecoration.  Which would mean that my beautiful January Jones City Print would be on hiatus.  Until yesterday.  Yesterday I had an epiphany.  You’re going to have to wait and see, but it’s amazing.  Yay!

So as I’ve been mulling over option 1 and option 2 for the past several months, I’ve also been roaming etsy for other fabulous prints.  Who needs big bucks to have lots of art?  Not me, I say.  I’ve added innumerable prints to my favorites and then, this week, I found this.

I’m in love.  It brought together all of my favorite prints so seamlessly.  I think it’s a step towards my new color palate for my home (provided I can get the hubs onside).  To see just how perfectly it works with things I love, check out my very first treasury list: walls.

Check it out, and buy stuff from those vendors.  I’m not getting any kickbacks if you do, but boy do I want them to be going strong when I start getting serious about redecorating!

i left my heart

i left my heart

I’m fairly well traveled, in fact I’ve been to 52 countries in my 28 years on earth. However, it wasn’t until I few weeks ago I had the joy of going to San Francisco.

I’ll admit, despite my obvious excitement,

SF 017

I was actually a little bit worried about going. I’ve been dreaming of San Francisco for years, and I’ve learned that sometimes, exceedingly high expectations can cause a place to lose its luster. Generally, places about which I have the lowest expectations end up being some of the best places I’ve been (e.g., Uganda) whereas places about which I have the highest expectations can end up being a big fat disappointment (e.g. Dubrovnik). So, it was with just an ounce of trepidation that I boarded the Virgin America flight from YYZ to SFO.

I needn’t have worried about the city by the bay. It captivated me. Over the course of three days we spent almost all our time on foot, visiting as many neighbourhoods as we could. We spent about 50 kms worth of time on foot, in fact. We even walked back to our Union Square hotel from Sausalito.

I think this trip was the start of a beautiful love affair. Everything came together to make it perfect. Perfect flight. Perfect weather. Perfect company. Perfect little hotel. On Friday, while the hubs was at a business meeting, I ate a burrito in the Mission, I wandered into the shops along Haight, and visited the “official” painted ladies at Alamo Square, I topped off my day with delicious sushi at a teensy tiny yet fabulous little restaurant.

On Saturday, when the hubs joined me, we ate the world’s most fabulous breakfast (at yet another teensy tiny, yet fabulous restaurant), took the cable car up to Lombard street and got our breath taken away by the views.

We wandered around Fisherman’s warf, where the hubs enjoyed a chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. And we boarded the Blue and Gold ferry to Sausalito, via Tiburon.

Then we walked and walked and walked across the bridge, to Chrissy field, through Marina, up Polk Street and back to our hotel. I’m going to provide you with numerous Golden Gate Bridge photos. Because I can’t pick just one.

Sunday morning we woke up refreshed and set off through the Stockton Street tunnel into Chinatown, then up into little Italy and up to Coit Tower, where we said hello to Christopher Columbus (any idea why he’s there?)

SF 022

We walked down the Filbert Street Steps (which I love) and grabbed a coffee (and tea for me) at the Market. We then were ravenous and went for delicious dim sum. We took a bus all the way out to Outer Richmond and walked back to Union Square, through the Golden Gate Park and the Haight and along Market Street as the sun came out and warmed us to our core. We topped the day off with delicious fondue and wine-on-tap (well Jon did, I’m on my “dry January”). On Monday, the hubs had to drag me, kicking and screaming, onto that plane back to YYZ.

When I think back to my long weekend, I am filled with the warm and fuzzies. I loved every minute of it. Even when my feet were on fire from walking 50km. I loved those minutes too… And, as cheesy as it sounds, I really did leave my heart in San Francisco.

[Oops:  In originally writing this post, I counted 12 countries twice.  If you've come back wondering why this is now "fifty-two" instead of "sixty-four" there your have it!  Chalk it up to first post jitters!]

In my 28 years on earth I have been to 52 countries. Sometimes I surprise even myself. When I wrote out this list this evening, I expected it to be about 40, or maybe 45. Somehow, the number got to 52. Travel-bug anyone?

So how much time have I actually spent there: I’ve spent years in only one of these countries, I spent months in a handful, I’ve spent weeks in several, and some, I’ve barely even scratched the surface.
