So You Wanna Be A Photographer?

Is there a little voice in the back of your head telling you that you want to be a photographer? I hear you. I had that too! I first heard the little voice when my friends’ wedding pictures were like nothing I’d ever seen before. So artistic. So creative. So … awesome. .

A year or so later, when I met Rob & Lauren, I thought they were the world’s coolest people, and I thought to myself “hey, maybe I can do this”. I knew for sure that I wanted to do it after our engagement session with Andrea (Pink Sugar Photography). And I started my business about 4 months later.

I wish I could say that it was easy. That one day I said “I’m a photographer” and I had clients knocking down my door. But it’s not easy. It is, in fact, really hard. It takes a lot of work. It takes a lot of practice. It takes a lot of tears. My first wedding was one of the scariest days of my life. And I still do a happy dance when I get an inquiry.

But being a photographer it is also incredibly rewarding. And, luckily, there are amazing people like Rob & Lauren preparing high-quality tutorials to make our lives easier. Photography Concentrate, Rob & Lauren’s newest project, is part awesome free tips (see their myriad of blog posts on business, posing, marketing, film, etc), and part paid resources. Their lightroom tutorial changed my life. I don’t think I could have managed moonlighting as a photographer without it.

Photography Concentrate’s most recent offering is Simple Wedding Photography, an e-book (by Lauren) that breaks down both shooting a wedding and the business of wedding photography. The ebook is 40% off until midnight tomorrow! And it includes a heck of a lot of material for only $23.97!

If you’re just starting out, I can’t recommend a better resource (and trust me, I’ve read them all). The shooting section isn’t just about the wedding day, but also about gear, engagement sessions, prep. Have you ever felt guilty that you don’t have $1,400 to spend on the 50mm f/1.2L lens? Stop right now. These two were very, very successful (and very, very awesome) and shot with the 1.4. It’s not about the lens.  It’s about the photographer. And Photography Concentrate is trying to make you the best photographer you can be.

The business section is invaluable (even if you’ve been at it for a few years), and the most useful section of the book, for me at least, was marketing.  I eat, breathe, and drink marketing right now – and somehow the way that Lauren breaks it down makes me feel like I’ve kinda sorta got it under control.  The ebook also includes awesome tips for managing your studio and your workflow, and much, much more.

To top it off, when you purchase the ebook you get a ton of bonus material: a sample album design, a branding worksheet, a post-wedding report card, a wedding day shot list(!), a wedding day worksheet, and a wedding prep checklist. All things I would have loved to have had 2 years ago. And some of which – the report card especially – I’m going to implement going forward.

But wait! It gets even better! If you buy it, you also get 30% off any of Photography Concentrate’s other tutorials ($55.97 for Super Photo Editing Skills is the deal of the century).

Guys, these are seriously awesome products.

Full disclosure: I use a ton of affiliate links in this review. But I would never, ever, review a product that I didn’t think was awesome. You want to hear gushy? Wait until I do a full fledged review on Super Photo Editing Skills.

  1. Oooo! I bought this last week. It’s been a wonderful read so far! And I love all the extras you get. The wedding work sheets are fantastic. I love Lauren’s welcoming & warm writing style. And the information has been invaluable.

    1. It’s so good hey? Do you edit in Lightroom? Their lightroom tutorial honestly changed my life and the way I felt about my growing photography business. All of a sudden I was able to stop resenting editing and start loving it!

  2. I took an 8 week Lightroom course in the fall & then just finished a Photoshop course this week. I’m going to check out the Lightroom tutorials though, as I could use a refresher! And I love Lauren’s way of teaching. You said the photography essentials course is good? I’d say I’m an intermediate photographer, but could use some reinforcement of the basics :)

    Have a lovely weekend! :)

    1. The photography essentials course is also pretty awesome! That said- it is pretty basic, so if you are comfortable using your camera in manual mode, making creative decisions with your gear, and knowing which lenses to shoot with when, you may find it too simple!

A great book on technical shooting is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. And that one is available at the library if you just want a refresher!
