travel … friday … (nha trang)

travel … friday … (nha trang)

Just a little late with travel “tuesday” this week guys.

Earlier this week (or possibly last week) I learned about a blog called The Dropout Diaries from Sally (Unbrave Girl). I love it. And it was this blog that got me thinking about the several weeks I spent in Vietnam as I travelled around the world, solo, at the ripe old age of 21.

On the beach in Nha Trang this group of guys flirted with me and my camera as the sun set and a hot air balloon took off.

Earlier that day the world’s most type-A traveller (an MBA student at a Southern California university who raced catamarans) found me on the beach and declared he needed another body to share a catamaran, would I join him? I found myself racing across the ocean, and heeling so far that we were practically parallel with the water. After my new friend tipped his hat and left to catch his bus I set out on that beach walk.

This was followed by one of the best meals of my life—a hot pot, but I’m pretty sure the hot stuff-in-the-pot was vinegar. It was so delicious I went back to that restaurant every day of my stay in Nha Trang. Does anyone know what that dish could have been? Now that I’ve remembered it, I’m on a mission to find out what it was, and find it somewhere in Vancouver.

[Update: So I decided to Google this, and it was actually really easy to find (note that last time I googled this about four years ago, I came up blank). But it's called Bo Nhung Dam. Now to find it in Vancouver!]

travel tuesday (link love)

Remember Best Of? If you aren’t my mom (aka, you have’t been following since the very beginning of this blog just over one year ago – whoa), Best Of was a Sunday round up of my favourite travel, food, photography, and design posts on the web. It sort of fizzled in April, and while I’ve got no plans to bring it back, I am going to spend the next couple of days while I’m in Antarctica (unless something has gone horribly wrong and I’m stranded on an iceberg somewhere) introducing you to some of my favourite things on the ‘net. (PS – why don’t we call it the ‘net anymore?).

Today, Travel Tuesday, I’m going to introduce you to three of my favourite travel blogs. The thread between these three blogs? The excellent, excellent writing.

So Many Places

I only recently started following So Many Places. I love Kim’s writing, and I find her totally inspirational and totally honest.  The perfect mix! There aren’t yet a lot of travel posts (they are currently finishing up saving before leaving on a RTW), but there are so many “quit your job to follow your dream” posts. In fact, Kim’s post (link below) is what inspired my recent Something More post.

Unbrave Girl

Sally (Unbrave Girl) is hilarious. And self-deprecating. And currently living and teaching in China. And despite self-identifying as “unbrave” is actually pretty brave. If you’ve been around since before April, you’ll know how much I love her (she was often my “Best Of” travel post, and if not then she was a special shout out). Sally’s blog posts aren’t short but they make me laugh out loud. Every. Single. Time.

Legal Nomads

Jodi (the Legal Nomad) has my favourite series on the entire internet, Thrillable Hours. Jodi is an escaped (hmm…. word choice?) corporate lawyer who left on her round-the-world trip around the same time we left on our 2008 RTW. The difference between her and us? Jodi has been travelling since. Her blog is a mix of information, travel essays, food, culture, thrillable hours, bird crap counter (for serious) and more.

My Favourite Post: The Limits of Long Term Travel: It Doesn’t Fix Everything.

Runner Up: Thrillable Hours: Kelly Newsome, Entrepreneur and Yoga Instructor

So there you have it folks, my three favourite travel blogs!
